Dune - Fremen desert gear by Grigori77 Dune - Fremen desert gear by Grigori77
Yeah, I've FINALLY got some new artwork to submit! :phew: Not only that, but this is something I've been meaning to drop in here for AGES, and I finally got round to putting it all together, so here it is.

As I'm sure some of you should remember, I am an INSANELY geeky fan of Frank Herbert's spectacularly epic hard sci-fi opera Dune saga, and for ages now (at least on and off ^^;) I've been working on an ever-evolving series of fanart/etc based on the series. And of course there are few things in the saga more important than the Fremen, so getting their look sorted was a serious necessity ... ;)

Anyways, the coolest thing about the Fremen of Arrakis, BY FAR, is the stillsuit, the all-purpose water-reclamation "survival suit" they wear in the desert. I had SO MUCH FUN working on the design for this, even if it did go though an awful lot of permutations before I got to this version, which I'd say is about as close as I think I can get to a definitive. I'll admit I was somewhat influenced by the David Lynch version, but I tried to work out the actual mechanics of how this would actually work as well, so it's a bit more workmanlike. That said, I'm not really a particularly technically-minded person, so if this totally wouldn't work don't hate me for it, okay? ^^;

Safe to say when I (eventually) start producing more Dune art I'll be using this basic design for the stillsuits, or at least some refined variation (:XD:) ... meanwhile, guess I'd better get back to those Harkonnens ... :lol:

Oh yeah, PLEASE download to get a proper look ... but I'll warn you it's a pretty massive file ...

mechanical pencil and Pilot Hi-tecpoints on cartridge paper, composition in Gimp 2.6. All the Dune stuff is property of the estate of Frank Herbert.

Dude nice job. :) I am reading Dune right now for some inspiration in my writings, just got to the part when the sandworm ate the spice harvester, that was really creepy. O.O Oh I found this pic thought you might like it. [link]

Yeah, that's one of my fave scenes in the book too. It's pretty awesome, love the way it demonstrates just how monstrously dangerous those things are. :D And yeah, that's a pretty cool mock-up - that should be a genuine print cover, it really suits it.

Yeah I know right, they should have used the mock cover for the actual book. That pic is exactly how I pictured the Fremen,the 84 movie messed that part up in my opinion. Common I mean a stillsuit would probably be lighter in color and have a robe over it, not some flat black suit, hello black absorbs heat, the 84 movie stillsuit would probably have cooked you instead of cool you. By the way do you plan on drawing a pic of Old Father Eternity?

I will get to Shai-Hulud at some point - can't really do my own Dune artwork without at least TOUCHING on the sandworms.  Of course it's gonna be a bloody big challenge to really do the Old Man of the Desert justice ...

Currently I'm working up to having another crack at the character designs, likely starting with the Fremen. So I might just get there before too long ... ;)

This is amazing. I hope you don't mind if I cosplay one of these still suits for burning man!! I might avoid the functioning thigh waste pockets though ;-)

:lol: Yeah, well the Fremen thinking is that it's all water, so why waste it? And don't forget there are plenty of references in the books that stillsuit's smell of greasy feces ...

So true. . .But that is probably the main reason that there hasn't really been a good(my opinion) film/tv adaption of it, it is just a too broad of a universe to fit into one movie or a scifi channel miniseries. . .Maybe a trilogy like Lord of the Rings or a HBO series like Game of Thrones would be the only way in my mind to capture its complexities enough to do it justice.

:nod: I'm in complete agreement there. Maybe they should get someone like Fincher or Del Toro to give it a go ... if not I'd give it a go myself someday if I got the chance ... :lol:

As long as they stay true to the story(and don't have voice guns) I am down for any director who is an actual fan of the universe and will try to do right by the source material. . .You'd probably do much better than most Hollywood directors would(at anything) anyway lol

:D Thanks! Granted this is very much my own interpretation of what's in the books, but I really worked my arse off to get it to work, so I'm glad it's been so successful.
